Although not a cosmetic surgery, breast cancer reconstruction surgery requires an aesthetic sense to be done well. The breast cancer reconstruction surgery require a tremendous 'attention to detail', and provide a great learning experience about the three dimensions of a breast mound. Dr. Michael J. Breast cancer is typically treated with some type of surgical removal of the tumor. The removal of the cancer can result in a partial removal of the breast or complete removal of the breast. With some breast cancers, the patient may request or require both breasts to be removed for safety or peace of mind. When limited breast removal is selected and even with some complete removals, radiation therapy may be recommmeded to local control of the remaining breast tissue or chest wall. Breast cancer reconstruction can be preformed at the time of the removal of the breast or later after the breast has been removed and radiation therapy is complete. When the reconstruction is performed at the same time as the mastectomy, it is called 'immediate' reconstruction and when it is formed later, it is called 'delayed' reconstruction. Some women opt to undergo all treatments for the cancer prior to any reconstructive efforts while other women want a breast mound created immediately. It is truely an individual's choice as to which they prefer.

These surgeries are provided to enlighten, and educate the public as to the residual defects of a breast mound removal and the ways that breast reconstruction can serve as an aide to restore this group of patients.

Breast cancer reconstruction surgery can be performed by using breast implants, or the tummy muscles and skin, or back muscles. There are also more aggressive ways to rebuild a breast as well with complicated breast flaps transfered from other parts of the body.
