Michael J. Brown, MD, PLLC is pleased to offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a revolutionary skin treatment using multiple laser wavelengths to eliminate and reduce pigmentation, broken capillaries, wrinkles and improve facial toning in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC. It is most often performed on the face and neck, but the chest, hands, arms, and legs can be treated as well.

What are the benefits of IPL in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC?

IPL is ideal for eliminating a variety of problems including:
  • Broken Capillaries
  • Wrinkles
  • Rosacea
  • Age Spots/Sun Spots
  • Large Pores
  • Freckles
  • Pigmentation Variances
  • Spider Veins
  • Flushing

How does IPL work in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC?

Laser light is absorbed by pigmented areas where it is converted to heat, causing a breakup in the pigment. In broken capillaries and spider veins, the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the blood and collapses the unwanted vein. For wrinkles and skin toning, the laser stimulates collagen growth. One of the medical aestheticians will analyze your skin condition and select the most effective treatment for you.

When will you see results with IPL in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC?

Effects are cumulative. After the first treatment you will see improvements to broken capillaries, small facial veins and some pigmented areas within a few days. Other improvements such as wrinkle reduction and toning will be subtler and may take one to three months. Friends may suggest that you look more rested. Will each subsequent treatment, subtle changes will accumulate until you have achieved the improvement you desire.

How often can you have IPL done in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC?

A series of five treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart, is our standard recommendation. Occasionally, more treatments may be needed for certain individuals or conditions. Periodic occasional maintenance treatments may be prescribed for optimal, lasting results.

What can you expect immediately post-treatment?

Immediately following the procedure you may experience some redness, swelling and/or a slight darkening of pigmented areas. The redness and swelling usually dissipate within one to three days however, darkened pigmentation may persist and peel lightly for up to one week. Makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately, if necessary. Additionally, hair growth may be impaired in the treated area, although it is not the intended purpose of this particular treatment. It is extremely important to apply a moisturizer with SPF30 sunblock and avoid sun exposure on a daily basis to prevent additional sun damage.

How long does IPL take?

This treatment takes approximately 30-60 minutes.
