Liposuction and Liposculpture in Ashburn, Leesburg & Loudoun

Liposuction Plastic Surgery for Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, & Washington DC

Liposuction surgery is very common. It is among the top five most common plastic surgeries done in the U.S. It is best performed by a plastic surgeon. Liposuction is the removal of fat from the body using tubes and suction. Small amounts can be removed. Large volumes can also be removed. Liposculpture is a more elegant surgery. Its focus is on contour, not volume. Fat can be taken from one area and replaced in another. This is called fat injection. This is more difficult than liposuction. It lets a surgeon shape a patient’s body. Liposuction may be used by itself for contouring. It may also be combined with other surgeries, such as a tummy tuck.

Contour irregularities due to structures other than fat can’t be improved with liposuction. It will not improve areas of dimpled skin known as cellulite. Diet and exercise may be used to help reduce body fat. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction. It is a surgery for removing fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Liposuction is common for both men and women. It may be done on several areas of the body at one time. Men tend to express concern about their chest, stomach, and sides. Women are more likely to request liposuction for their:

  • ♦ belly
  • ♦ hips
  • ♦ outer and inner thighs
  • ♦ knees
  • ♦ arms

Liposuction is rarely done around the calves and ankles.

Patients receive anesthesia for liposuction. Typically, patients are asleep for surgery. A dedicated medical provider should be in charge of anesthesia. The plastic surgeon should not be in charge of anesthesia. Both jobs demand 100 percent attention.

Liposuction is done through small incisions. These incisions heal with small scars. During surgery, the fat is removed using tubes called canulas. These are passed into the fat through the incisions. The canulas are connected to suction units. The amount of aspirate that can be removed depends on the fat in an area.

In surgery, a wetting solution is placed into the areas to be recontoured. The fluid provides additional anesthesia and decreases bleeding. The aspirate that is removed is composed of the fat and the wetting solution. This process reshapes the area. The small access wounds are closed. Patients then wear a support garment. The garment will be worn for one to three weeks. Exercise may be resumed within two to three weeks. This will depend on the number of areas and how much fat was removed.

Liposuction Testimonial

I considered liposuction because I had problems with my abdomen and thighs. My thighs were thick and protruding. My stomach always looked full. I didn’t know what to do. I could not wear any of the clothes in my closet. They were either too large or too tight. I was unhappy with my body shape. I wanted liposuction. When, I thought of liposuction, I was afraid of how much it would cost. Still, I got on the internet and looked for the best plastic surgeon in my area. I found Dr. Michael J. Brown. I went for a consultation, and I was amazed at what Dr. Brown could do for me. I showed him my problem areas, and he told me that he could reduce the size of my thighs and abdomen. He said I would look slimmer and feel better about myself.I had the liposuction and over eight liters of fat and fluid were removed. Dr. Brown carefully monitored my progress with several follow-up visits. He made sure that everything went well. By two months after the surgery, I had dropped from a size 14 to a size 10, and I am still losing weight. I am ecstatic with my liposuction results with Dr. Brown!

Risks and Complications of Liposuction

Liposuction involves a certain amount of risk. You should understand the risks and complications before surgery. Most patients do not experience complications. Still, you should understand the risks. Below is a shortened list of risks. Click for a full list of list of risks of liposuction surgery.

Patient selection - Individuals with the following may not be the best candidates:

  • ♦ poor skin tone
  • ♦ significant medical problems
  • ♦ obesity
  • ♦ unrealistic expectations

Bleeding - It is possible to have bleeding during or after surgery. Should this occur, it may require treatment. It may also require a blood transfusion. It is best not to take any of the medications listed for 14 days before surgery. They may increase the risk of bleeding.

Infection- Treatment with antibiotics or further surgery may be necessary.

Changes in sensation - Temporary changes in sensation may occur. These will resolve over time. However, diminished or complete loss of skin sensation can occur.

Skin scarring - Abnormal scars may occur within the skin and deeper tissues.

Skin contour changes - Contour depressions in the skin may occur. Visible and palpable wrinkling of skin can also occur.

Asymmetry - Factors such as skin tone, bony prominences, and muscle tone may contribute to asymmetry.

Skin loss - If it occurs, additional treatments may be necessary.

Seroma - Fluid accumulations can occur in areas where liposuction was done.

Allergic reactions - Local allergies to tape, suture material, or topical preparations have occurred. Systemic reactions may occur to drugs used during surgery as well as prescription medicines.

Surgical anesthesia - Both local and general anesthesia involve risk. There is the possibility of complications, injury, and even death from anesthesia or sedation.

Pulmonary complications - Fat embolism syndrome occurs when fat droplets are trapped in the lungs. This is rare, but it can be fatal.

Surgical shock - Liposuction can cause severe trauma. Infections or extreme fluid loss can lead to severe illness and even death.

Other kinds of treatment that are NOT recommended:

Mesotherapy/Lipodissolve?

This was first made in France in 1952. It was thought that injecting medicines into the skin could change the skin quality. They used highly concentrated compounds. They hoped the skin would have positive effects from this. These compounds were injected into the deep dermis or mesoderm. This is why it is called Mesotherapy.

These solutions can contain various combinations of substances. They may include:

  • ♦ vitamins
  • ♦ minerals
  • ♦ stimulants
  • ♦ plant extracts
  • ♦ vasodilators
  • ♦ hormones
  • ♦ enzymes
  • ♦ NSAIDs
  • ♦ other meds

The contents of many of these compounds are unclear. This is dangerous. Many descriptions of give vague details of the ingredients. Many prescribers have their own mix. They are often kept secret. These compounds are contrary to accepted medicine.

Sellers of mesotherapy attempt to recommend it for a wide range of conditions including:

  • ♦ pain management
  • ♦ sports injuries
  • ♦ cellulite
  • ♦ wrinkles
  • ♦ hair loss
  • ♦ psoriasis
  • ♦ weight loss
  • ♦ body contouring

Their effect is unclear and results are vague. For these and other reasons, mesotherapy is not a widely accepted in the U.S. It did not appear in the U.S. until the late 1990’s. It is still not a standard practice. Mesotherapy is not a type of liposuction. It is not a recommended treatment option.

In 2005, the CDC reported mesotherapy as the source of an outbreak of skin infections and ulceration in the patients who chose to have the treatments.

Lipodissolve

Lipolysis treatments also claim to reduce unwanted fat by injections of compounds. The differences between mesotherapy and lipolysis are the injection locations and the compound mixtures. Mesotherapy injects into the skin. Lipolysis solutions are injected into the fat below the skin. Lipolysis calls for brand named products such as Lipodissolve and Lipostabil. There are also private mixes provided by pharmacies. Lipolysis is not an accepted treatment. In fact, the one common ingredient in almost all Lipolysis is PPC. This is not an FDA approved medication. The FDA has not approved PPC for use in injections for any purpose. Lipolysis as it stands uses patients as guinea pigs in ways the FDA has not found acceptable.

Lipolysis does not actually melt fat, no matter what lipolysis ads may claim. Instead, they appear to kill the fat cells that make up most fat tissue. It is thought that they reduce body fat either by killing off the fat cells in the body, or by their toxic effects. Studies have found that the fat tissue under the skin started to show evidence of:

  • ♦ cell death
  • ♦ cell wall disruption
  • ♦ strands of scar tissue
  • ♦ inflamed tissue and collagen deposits

Lipolysis may be killing living cells and leaving the dead tissue in your body. It is not surprising that this type of treatment often shows side effects. The most common complications reported from this procedure are:

  • ♦ pain
  • ♦ tenderness to the touch
  • ♦ redness
  • ♦ stinging
  • ♦ burning
  • ♦ itching
  • ♦ swelling
  • ♦ bruising

Lipolysis is not a type of liposuction. It is not recommended. Liposuction, as the name implies, actually removes fat from the body. Lipolysis does not. It leaves dead fat cells inside the body. It does so in a way that does not have FDA approval. So it may not be safe. Liposuction remains the most precise and safest removal of fat possible.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Position on Lipolysis

Strong marketing has led to the growth of Lipolysis centers all over the country. These centers are not regulated. The ASAPS does not endorse these treatments. They lack objective proof of safety and efficacy. They lack FDA approval. We recommend patients avoid such these treatments. They are not the best method for fat removal. Patients should be cautious about them. They should also be cautious about treatments from people who do not abide by FDA standards. They may not be qualified to administer medical care.
