Restylane, Perlane & Juvéderm
Facial fine lines, and Facial volume restoration in Northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, & Washington DC
Restylane, Perlane, and Juvéderm are all products made from hyaluronic acid. These products are designed to be injected into areas of the face, including the lips. They serve to restore lost facial volume or augment the facial volume to a fuller, more desired look. Based on the features of the products, they’re injected into different depths of the face. Some may have a thinner consistency. These products are to be injected closer to the skin to treat fine lines. When used correctly they avoid unnatural ridges or bumping. They are broken down faster by the body and reabsorbed. Some of the products are thicker and are designed to be placed deeper into the face. These are used to restore or augment facial volume. The thicker the product is, the longer it lasts.
Okay, so now you have a basic understanding of the products. Let’s get more into hyaluronic acid; we are going to call it HA. HA is a natural complex sugar that retains water, and is found in all organisms. It absorbs more than 1,000 times its weight in liquid and can add volume to the skin’s surface. HA plays an important role in many areas of the body. It helps maintain skin volume and hydration, eye volume and shape, and joint lubrication. It will bind with elastin and collagen to transport nutrients to cells. The combination of collagen, elastin, and HA provides structure, elasticity, and volume to the skin.
As skin cells age and are exposed to pollutants and u.v. rays, they lose their ability to make HA. This causes the skin to lose volume, causing facial wrinkles and folds. Dermal fillers with HA are used to temporarily replace lost HA. This restores the skin’s volume and smooth appearance.
Several companies sell HA products worldwide. Their main product lines are discussed below. Restylane and Perlane are made by one company, and Juvéderm is made by another.
Restylane and Perlane are safe
Restylane can create a natural beauty lift with the body’s own material. It is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on HA. The Restylane gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result produces a natural enhancement. How long it lasts depends on which of the Restylane products is used and where it is injected. The more mobile the area is, the faster it is broken down. In the lips, it will go away within 6 months. In the checks, it may last for 2 years. Restylane gives natural volume in your skin to lift and produce new firmness, resulting in a healthy appearance.
Perlane is a HA as well. The difference between Restylane and Perlane is that Perlane has larger particles. This makes Perlane better suited to fill deep facial folds. It is not suited to be placed at the surface layer. It is considered a deeper facial product.Restylane and Perlane are both safe products made of HA. Restylane was the first CE-approved, non-animal, stabilized HA approved for cosmetic use. To date, more than a million treatments have been carried out with Restylane in more than 60 countries.
The HA is naturally integrated into body tissues and allows for the passage of vital hormones and nutritive substances like oxygen. HA is biodegradable, which means that when the gel breaks down, it turns into water and carbon dioxide. After that, it disappears from the body. These products are non-animal products; there are no risks of an allergic reaction if you are sensitive to foods such as beef, chicken, or eggs. The absence of animal products means there is no risk of transmitting disease. This differs from other injected products like collagen, which comes from cow hide. Restylane comes in three forms:
- Restylane – For moderate wrinkles and lip enhancement
- Restylane Fine Lines- For the correction of superficial lines
- Restylane Perlane – For deeper folds, facial contours, and lip enhancement
Where may Restylane and Perlane be used?
Restylane and Perlane may be used for treating facial wrinkles or folds, and enhancing facial features. Restylane is best injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The injected gel produces natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. The results can be seen immediately. Treating wrinkles is fast and safe and leaves no scars or other traces.
Many people are looking for a slightly fuller shape for their chin. Just a touch of additional volume with Restylane is best and may make a drastic difference. This will give your face a fuller, more defined appearance. Perlane is specifically designed for shaping facial contours. Perlane works by volume augmentation. Injected into the face, it corrects deep folds and lifts up the skin from cheeks and chin, giving a new facial shape.
How long does it last?
These treatments are long-lasting but not permanent. The length of time it lasts is variable. It depends on many factors. Your age, skin type, lifestyle and muscle activity are important. So is where it is put and the technique used. It is recommended to plan for future visits to maintain the results. Most patients choose to have a follow-up treatment six to twelve months after the first treatment. This has been shown to increase the length of the results.
The reason Restylane and Perlane remains for 6 to 12 months after injection is due to its stabilization method. This method allows the volume to remain intact for a long period. As the HA in Restylane begins to break down, your body’s water takes its place. The more broken the gel becomes; the more water is able to bind to it. This is the main reason it lasts so long.
What about the injection process?
No prior skin test is needed. You can have the treatment at your first visit. The treatment takes less than thirty minutes. The time depends on the area and correction you want performed. The result is immediate.
Prior to your procedure, a topical anesthetic cream can be applied. You can also choose to have a local anesthetic injection. For wrinkle treatments, this type of injection is not required. But it is recommended and can be arranged by request.
What about after the treatment?
After the treatment, you can expect:
- a slight redness
- itching sensation
This is a normal result of the process. The discomfort is temporary and resolves in a few days. With lip augmentation, the swelling will last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week. During this time, the lips may look uneven The result directly after the treatment should not be regarded as final. If the discomfort continues or if other reactions occur, you should contact the office. A touch-up treatment within 2 weeks after the first treatment may be necessary to achieve the desired correction.
After treatment, please note the following:
- Avoid touching the treated area for the next six hours
- After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water
- light make-up can be applied
- do not expose the treated area to intense heat or extreme cold
If you have had prior cold sores, there is a risk that the treatment could contribute to an outbreak. In this case, it is best to use an antiviral medication. If you are taking aspirin or similar medication, please note that this may increase bruising at the injection site. It is best to stop those types of medications for several days prior to the treatment.
Can there be adverse reactions to Restylane or Perlane?
Although rare, about 1 in 2000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions. These usually consist of swelling at the injection site. Redness, tenderness, and acne-like lesions have been reported. These reactions can start from a few days up to four weeks after the injection. They are generally mild to moderate in nature. They are self-limiting with an average duration of two weeks.
How often may they be used?
With these products, you have the option of continuing or changing the treatments. The treatment can be repeated as often as you like. One of the best advantages of Restylane and Perlane is that they are long-lasting, but not permanent. Unlike permanent cosmetic treatments or implants, you always have the option of re-evaluating your needs when the effect has worn off. A follow-up can be performed at any time you like. Juvéderm is a facial dermal filler introduced by Allergan, Inc. It helps improve the appearance of deep facial folds, fine facial lines, and wrinkles around the mouth. It also enhances and creates fuller lips. This smooth gel is a non-animal HA facial filler that offers a very natural. The results can last for up to six months or longer. Juvéderm’s longevity and smoothness can be attributed to the high amount of HA and its formulation process. Juvéderm has some of the highest concentration of cross-linked HA of any facial fine line dermal filler. The smoother consistency also helps to control placement of the product.
The FDA’s approval of Juvéderm in June of 2006 was based upon information from a clinical trial. For six months, 439 test subjects were followed after an injection of Juvéderm in one nasolabial fold, and collagen in the other fold. Juvéderm proved to be a more continual winkle corrector over a six month period. A total of 88% of the subjects involved in the study preferred the Juvéderm.
Possible adverse effects of Juvéderm
The most common reported side effects are:
- injection site redness
Patients should notify the office if they are on any medication that may prolong bleeding. These can cause increased bruising. As with all injections, there is a risk of infection.
